Hi Chris:

Yes to the below mentioned. It might make sense to get a external
CD burner drive. ( The techie did suggest that, too.) Maybe I will.

I believe that there is still life in this aging iMac. Good years yet
to come.

Thanks,

Mike Burris

P.S. Any sugestions on the speakers?

 >Can anyone tell me anything a tech couldn't tell me about getting out the
CD? When I try to eject via the normal methods, I get a humming sound like
a truck starting.

When you try to eject it, does it make the eject whiring noise like it is
trying, then stops and makes it again (like it is taking the CD back in).

If so, watch the front of the slot carefully and you will likely see the
very edge of the CD start to stick out. Grab it with tweezers or needle
nose pliers (carefully so you don't scratch the CD). It may take a few
tries to actually grab it enough to get it to finish coming out.

The slot load drives use rubber rollers to push and pull the CD, and
those rollers dry out with age and can't grip the CD very well. As a
result, it can't keep enough friction to actually push the CD out. It
tries, gives up, and pulls the CD back in.

Nothing is bent, and the drive is fine. Alas, there is little to be done
to solve this problem without taking the drive apart and cleaning
(deglazing) the rollers. If you know how, then it is a fairly easy and
inexpensive task. If you don't know how, it will be easier and cheaper to
replace the drive entirely. And if you plan to replace the drive, it will
likely be easier and cheaper still to get an external firewire drive and
just stop using the internal drive entirely.
