The external drive is a great idea. I have an Iomega 52X USB 2
drive I use with most of my Macs and my peecees. Real handy in a
Mac/pc household.
Of course the Iomega is an odd beast and I have to use Patchburn,
but it works quite well.
For speakers, I use a set of Labtechs with a 20 watt subwoofer and
5 watt flat panel satellites. Originally cost me 'bout $30. Sounds
better than my (not terribly expensive) component stereo system.
If anyone is considering an external drive then Firewire is the best
choice because you can boot off it and you can't boot off a USB.
