I'm having wierd problems with my mouse. The cursor (and ONLY the
cursor) keeps freezing up on the screen, forcing me to reboot. This has
happened a few times in the last month... but now it's happened four
times just today. Ran Norton Utilities and rebuilt the desktop to no
avail. Do I just need a new mouse or is this a deeper problem?=20

I hope I don't sound condescending, but I'm wondering why the most obvious explanation -- there's a short in the wire connecting the mouse to the keyboard -- didn't come to you.

Of course, that may not be the actual answer -- perhaps that USB port is suffering intermittent power loss, or you have too many USB devices drawing power from your computer and when you use too many of them, something loses power (in this case, your mouse).

Since there are multiple possible explanations, test each one:

1. First, let's assume the problem is in the mouse cord. Try a different mouse and see if the problem reappears. If it does, then it's NOT the mouse cord. If it doesn't, then it IS the mouse cord and the solution is obvious: replace the mouse.

2. Assuming it's NOT the mouse cord, try plugging the mouse into the OTHER port on the keyboard and see if the problem reappears (unplug other USB devices that are attached to your machine for testing purposes). If the problem goes away, then the usual USB port you're using is going bad. That can be a problem, but a USB extender cable could help by allowing you to plug the mouse into some other USB port.

3. If the mouse and the USB ports aren't the problem, then it's most likely a drain on your power. Unplug items that draw power from the USB ports (like self-powered hubs, etc.) and see if the problem reappears. By now, I think the problem should have already been determined.

Cheers
Chas
