hello foks,

I've tried to bring my brother's 350 MHz slot-loading iMac up to scratch and
install Panther on it on one of 2 partitions of the 40 GB HD. I've put in a
512 MB crucial RAM stick to add to the original 64 MB. I've also upgraded OS
9.0.4 to OS 9.1. According to System Profiler:

-Revisione Boot ROM $77D.45F6
-Versione Boot ROM $0004.19f1
-Versione Mac OS ROM 6.1

so I should be allright. However when I double-click on the OS X installer,
I get the message "Startup disk was unable to select the install cd as
the startup disk". If I try to select the CD as from the Startup Disk cp,
the OS X show up but is grayed out. Reboot holding C yelds the flashing
question mark. There's also some beeping going on, I can't quite explain
that, but it seems connected to the CD derive, or coming from it. Finally,
reboot while pressing the Opt key brings up the blue screen with the OS 9
and the OS X CD to choose from, except that the CD can't be selected.

Even more baffling is the fact that it showed the same behaviour when I
tried to boot it from an OS 9.2.2 clone that I have used to starup several
Macs with (all portables, in all truth). I also tried more recent CDs from a
flat screen iMac and an iBook G4, but these are auto-ejected without even
being mounted. So far, I have managed to boot only from its original OS 9
CD, so the CD drive works to some extent. Any suggestion as to what's going
on and how to get around this?

(Unfortunately, I don't have another Mac to swap the HD to, only a range of
powerbooks).

thanks for any suggestions and cheers,
gianfranco
