No solution to your photo viewing issues, but it reminded me of this app I
downloaded the other day:

When you click on an image file, MilkyWay pops up a window with a
thumbnail and some options, (rotate, view fullscreen, etc)

I only tried it for 10 minutes.  It does what it claims to do, but OS X's
column (combined with Preview,) view works for me.
