iPhoto and the finder (and heavy-duty editing programs) aren't the
only options for viewing photos - these sound like what the original
poster might want:

I haven't actually used any of these, except CocoViewX to do a
slideshow when I didn't want to import the photos into iPhoto, but
they all got decent ratings at Versiontracker (esp. the first 2). I
downloaded them because they looked good, but then got into using
iPhoto and it worked for me.
BTW, I have read, as also mentioned in someone else's post, that in
iPhoto 6 you don't have to import the photos; somewhere it has the
option of accessing them in place.
