Official support for PPC under Ubuntu disappeared a while back. But
there is a "community" supported version that is current.

I just tried putting it on a Sawtooth. The Live CD worked, briefly, if I
tried to do much of anything it locked up. I was able to do the install
which went okay. But it boots into a blank screen. It's likely the same
problem most of the Linux distros have, X11 isn't configured correctly
for the video card. Even theough the fix has usually been fairly simple.

AHA!

I just tried installing Ubuntu 9.04 and I didn't have to fiddle with anything... AMAZING.

To start with the ".iso" file burned to a CD-R, something the 9.10 version doesn't.

The Live CD worked without a hitch. I didn't have to pass any parameters to get it to boot. Once booted it worked. Version 9.10 locked up after some period of time or some activity.

Installation went okay. I rebooted and it came right up, no messing around with boot parameters or X11. That makes it different from most Linux distros I've tried.

Now I'll have to see how well it works.

I did run the Update Manager and it had a mess of stuff to update and that went well. It did offer an update to version 9.10 which I'm holding off on for now.
