I will say this, I've found Debian to be fairly easy to setup on my PowerBooks, as well as my G4 mini, but, I'm a long-time Linux user, so YMMV. Anyway, Debian is my choice for PPC Macs, just because I've used it for a long time, and I've been very happy with it.
The idea of learning a distro friendly to PowerBooks appeals to me because i plan a TiBook to be its eventual home. With that in mind i just tried installing Debian on the G4 imac. It boots up but fails to go into Gnome. Unfortunately, at the point where it asks if i want to review and fix what went wrong it locks up so that i cannot select yes or no. Bummer.
