I haven't seen files that large as yet since we have our present users
conditioned to smaller messages. Microsoft mail would lock up a box when a
message over one or two megs was in it and wouldn't let you retrieve the
messages.
The spool isn't keeping messages for any length of time so It would appear
that isn't the cause at this time. It is great info to keep in mind though.

Our service literally comes to a halt for varying lengths of time, sometimes
up to a few hours.
If we configure an IMAP client that seems to be unafected.

Not sure how large exactly but I have seen it on files as small
as 5 MB. Last night I noticed some slowdown on my IMAP
and looked in there to see a 20+ MB file being transferred.
However I should mention that mine just slows down, it does
not actually time out on the clients.
Not sure of any workaround at the moment. I am seeing a lot
more of this activity lately with the large file transfers and I
am actually considering installing a separate SMTP server for
outbound transfers.
If it helps any I had this same problem with two other flavors
of mail server. It never really bothered me much. Slowed
things down for a few but then went back to normal shortly.
