Hi All,

Good and important question Dan.

It turns out that you are in fact correct. This means your 170 users,
across 24 domains, do all count towards your 250 limit and that you are
using the correct product (sorry, means you can't downgrade to the 100).

I dug into this some more and it looks like it was I that miscounted! The
definition of a user (someone that can send, regardless if by POP, IMAP/Web)
is correct but the count is based on all users, totaled, across all of your
domains. So you do have unlimited aliases, lists and domains but not users.
Sorry for the confusion. Note that Root does NOT count as a user.

For more details, check out:
http://support.ipswitch.com/kb/IC-20050203-DM01.htm but here's the summary
for IMail, Instant Messaging and Collaboration.

***START LICENSING***

In IMail, a "user" is an actual email account that is capable of receiving
email messages. Aliases are not considered users. Aliases only act as
forwarders to real email accounts and are not counted towards the license.
(Also, "Root" is NOT counted as a user.)

In Ipswitch Instant Messaging, a user is an ID that is capable of logging on
to the server to send IM messages. Even though all your users may not be
active at once, if the ID exists in your users database, then the ID is
counted as a user.

In Workgroup Share, a user is an account that you create in WGS Manager that
is capable of sharing or viewing other user's information.

Example:

If you own a 250 user ICS version you are capable of creating 250 users in
each of the modules of ICS. This license is NOT a combination of the
modules, (i.e. IMail 150, WGS 50, IIM 50). Instead, the license allows you
to create 250 users in each of the modules (i.e. IMail 250, WGS 250, IIM
250).

***END LICENSING***

bye for now,

kg

Kevin, what happens if you miss-count? Does IMail stop, complain, certain
users don't work, what?

I'd always counted all users (170) in all domains (24), requiring a 250 User
license. Are you saying I can use the 25 user license (actually, I can't -
31 users in one domain - but a nice try<g>).

Do the automatically created users count? (root), disabled accounts?

Dan

Hello Jacques,

It's actually a little more lenient than that.

You can't have more than 25 users in any single domain. So you could have
up to 25 in each of your 3 domains, if you so desired, simultaneously,
equating to 75 users total.

Hi Kevin,

Thanks for the info. So if I have this correct I could use the 25 user
license with 3 domains so long as I don't go over 25 mailboxes combined
between all three domains? In my set up two of the domains I just
forward to an exchange server with ~180 aliases and there is only one
administrative box with web access for each domain. The third domain
has only 18 mailboxes.

Thanks,

Jacques

Hi Dan,

Good question.

Correct, there is no limit on Domains on IMail Server 2006. Aliases do
not
count as users, so you can have unlimited Domains, Aliases and Lists.

A single user can have POP and IMAP and Web access and it counts as 1
user.
A user is, technically, anyone that can both send AND receive email. An
alias can receive but can't send and hence does not count as a user.

Finally, they've said what they mean! Hurray!

Now, if they'd define the term "user", that would be nice. I appears
that
there is no limit on domains (although I'd prefer to see it specifically
stated), but does an Alias count? does a List count? Is a user "the
number
of pop3 logins in any 24-hour period? What?

My site might need 100, 250 or 1000 user pricing, depending on how they
count.
