True. Basic registry copy without manipulation creates a standby server.
However, a simple script could be created to modify that info to be an
active backup MX, spooling for the primary.

The mail servers do not have to be the same. The "sync" process that is
developed would handle the specifics, e.g. Sandy's exchange-to-aliases tool.

If you "sync" your primary and backup by syncing the Imail registry
settings, doesn't that basically turn your backup mail server into a
"primary server on standby"? Right now, our primary is "mail." and our
backup is "mail2.". I guess it would depend on what is exported from the
registry.

We don't have the traffic that a lot of people do in that I may go a few
weeks without adding or removing a user. So to sync the two might by easy.
Right now, I think I'm using the "store-and-forward" that others have
criticized in the past. :o

That is why I felt outsourcing might be the easiest for the backup.
However, maybe I'm just being lazy.

Another question is about versions. We are still running 8.2x on both. I
haven't not had the guts to upgrade to the newest version. Does the backup
server also need to be running the same version?

Well, one that is available is Sandy's tools for synchronizing with
Exchange. I believe Exchange is the master in this case.

For Imail, this could be done fairly easily by exporting registry or DB
settings.

For automating it, the easiest way is probably to set up a separate admin
interface that in turn makes the updates to both servers. This would
require some development, however.

Hi

>>Now-a-days its not recommended to setup a backup mail server unless its
configured exactly like your primary server. That includes knowing what all
valid addresses and aliases are, plus using the same black lists to reject
connections.

Are there any KB articles about how to do this with Imail? How do you
automatically sync all the settings?

Thanks
