Len, thanks for the great link. Sam Spade has an incredible freeware Windows
program that does DNS checks, SMTP relay checks, blacklist checks as well as
all the standard ping, dig, tracert, whois, etc. Perfect for admins on this
list.

THEIR DNS setup is total disaster. I don't see many as bad as that.

Well, that's as dumb as their own DNS set up.

Here, ever their own forward zone isn't set up. No A record for ucalgary.ca:

dig ucalgary.ca

; <<>> DiG 8.3 <<>> ucalgary.ca
;; res options: init recurs defnam dnsrch
;; got answer:
;; ->>HEADER<<- opcode: QUERY, status: NOERROR, id: 4

There is a huge number of mail servers that don't have their reverse
zones correct. Reversing the ip address is not a practical policy
for anti-mail abuse because it gives too many false positives.

Ask your web log analyzer to reverse the ip's of all web
visitors. Here, we see 30% of ip's don't have reverse zone defined.

Can you now deliver mail to ucalgary now, every time?

nslookup, dig, www.samspade.org, DNS Expert Pro.
