I do remember hearing about something similar at AOL, but usually when a
Sendmail host is configured for this PTR checking, the remote does not even
accept the email. The first try would fail, giving the error I showed, in
the IMail log. I'm afraid I cannot remember if IMail continued trying,
ultimately failing at Max Tries and then returning the message to the sender
(pretty sure this was the case) or if it bounced after the first try (I
don't think this was what happened).
I too would say it is 'good practices' to have PTR for any host that has an
A record. Just seems logical, to me. Of course, if one is trying to 'hide'
something.....
