I built a set of boxes with W2K running MS DNS that was to do DNS for 29,000
domains. After the boxes got to a few million queries per month they just
began to choke. This was May of 2000. I rebuilt using RedHat 6.2 or 7,
whatever was available at that time, and BIND 8.x, and the traffic shot up
to 8 million queries per month. Now I use RedHat 7.1, and the firewall
built into the 2.4 kernel, with BIND 9.x without a single issue. The boxes
only take 1 minute to restore if the machine is already a standby, if not,
it takes 15 - 20 minutes to restore the DNS servers from scratch, which
handle 29,000 plus domains.
My recommendation, stay away from anything running DNS on a W2K server if
you ever plan to grow. It is much easier to restore, and at least 45
minutes or more faster to restore a RedHat 7.1 server, than it is to restore
a W2K server. Gotta go with what works, and scales.
