I know an Imail user who was paying $80 per change in her DNS when she had
it at swbell. If you mean use an swbell server for Imail�s DNS, then
swbell�s server has to allow recursive queries from Imail�s ip.

no. your Imail could send to swbell domain since swbell could answer
queries for swbell.net without recursing. All other domains, it refused to
work for you, as you found out.
All you need is for your Imail needs to query a good DNS to send mail.
