Yes, it worked for them, because they allowed themselves to use their DNS
server. They won't allow anyone off the street to use and abuse it.
You need to picture DNS lookups as two separate pieces. It's just like
E-mail. Your mail server can accept E-mail for users at your domain, and
it can send outgoing E-mail (relaying).
Your question, from a mail server point of view rather than DNS, is like
asking "Why will freeservers accept E-mail addressed to my domains, but not
let me send all my mail through their mail server to other mail servers?".
You need a DNS server that will allow you to "relay" (send outgoing
requests), rather than one that will just accept queries for a certain domain.

Don't do that. Their job is to accept DNS queries for your domains, not to
let you use their DNS server for "relaying".
You must have some kind of Internet access. In order to browse the web,
for example, you need to use a DNS server. Your ISP should be providing
this. What do you use as a DNS server for your workstations? You should
use that same IP address for IMail.
