Here here...

Rumormill is w/ the engineers that 3Com plays some tricks (on the edge of
the specs) to get some extra speed, but the tricks are not entirely
compatible with specifications... that is, they make some assumptions which
other folks (like Cisco) don't make... and this is what eventually gets them
into trouble as described below. Of course, they totally scream if your
entire network is 3Com because every xcvr takes advantage of the same
tricks.

The Intel nics (our choice) are "dead by the book" and as a result tend to
be absolutely stable,... generally we do not see performance problems with
them either. So far, all performance issues we've seen with Intel nics
turned out to be trouble elsewhere on the Lan - like topology issues, hubs,
switches, etc...

My $0.02.

| Richard and Rick,
| Curiosity, what type of switches/hubs were you using (or did you connect
| them directly to take that out of the picture?)
| I've talked to several who've had problems with 3ComNics + Cisco Switches
| (which I've had problems with). When I say problems, it was
| speed related.
| Not like going from 100Mb to 90, but rather like going from 100Mb
| to 128kb.
| Reboot the PC, it would fly for anywhere between a day and two weeks, then
| it would just slow down to a crawl. Switching to Intel card fixed it.
|
| If we keep chipping in 2 cents, pretty soon we'll have a dollar! :-)
