I'm certain I've installed patches via Term Serv so I don't think
that really should not be a problem.

You'll have to install your base package and then upgrade to
6.06. I personally think 7.12 is worth upgrading and I had few
problems with 7.02.
Just turn everything off - all imail services and imail admin.
I don't have any other options really.
