After you have SCSI controller + fast drives, and preferably separate drives for mailqueue and mailboxes, then big cache, 128 mb, on the SCSI controllers is the a big improvement in disk throughput. For 400K msgs/day, you need all the RPM's and disk cache you can afford. IMGate would off-load all the outbound deliveries to Internet, taking a lot of pressure off your mailbox server, esp if you tend to have many 1000's of deferred msgs in that 400k. Big mailqueue build-up on Imail is often ugly.
