Hi Mark, Whilst I understand (dimly; my bad) what problems you have been experiencing with IMail Server, you are not alone with reporting issues with Web Mesaging. (A search through the archives will lilely turn out more postings than you could shake at a stick at.)
I manage a few IMail sites and never have experienced the troubles you mentioned but this may be be due do rather loe usage. As regards moving the Web Messaging templates to an IIS or Apache server, it cannot hurt -- though it is not a prerequisite with out-of-the-box IMail Server. Still, if you can afford to do so, it really helps to offload the proprieatery IMail's Web server module from serving graohics and which is not IIS nor Apache by any measure (and the bottleneck occurs with far more users than the sites that I'm administering). As regards MailMax, I am left to wonder why you would switch to IMail, which I believe to be your initial quesion. I realize that you may have been dissatisfied with MaxMail and were searching for an alternative. I'd still recimmend IMail Server for its ease if adninistratnion -- e.g., through Program Aliases to effect running any scrip by sending an e-mail that executes your program. lMail Server 7.1.x also includes outgoing message rules in addition to the regular incoming rules and other benefits such as calendaring and spell-checking. While there are some really sharp people on this list, the most they can do is provide workarounds and utilities for the existing product. Our main issue has been troubleshooting the web interface which causes 8-10 support tickets a day with us from our customers, with users reporting the exact same message: 'invalid action' message OR 'user field empty' when adding a new user IPSwitch's response has been: 1) Move the web messaging off port 80 2) Try a 3COM network card (instead of an Intel) While it sounded strange, we did replace the Intel card with a 3COM which made no difference. We've seen several others our there suggesting that we move the web messaging to another port and install a real web server (like IIS or Apache) to take the code red hits out , then pass the valid traffic to Imail. While that may or may not work (we haven't tried it, if that's what it takes to make it work and they won't admit the problem, we'd rather find a product with the web interface based on IIS/Apache). It's important to understand that we host thousands of sites using both IIS and Apache spreading over 20,000 IP addresses. Imail only has ONE IP address assigned to it and gets very few code red *requests* to begin with. This problem has been ongoing for over 6 months now with no answers from IPSwitch, they have essentially told us that we must move it off port 80 for it to work correctly. Some web server. I still didn't really understand why you're moving to Imail, while the discussion list is a plus, did you have any actual reason for moving? Did SmartMax not resolve any issues you had with their product? Were there features lacking that Imail provides for you? -Mark -----Original Message----- From: Guy Isabel [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]] Sent: Saturday, November 23, 2002 1:48 PM To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Cc: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: Re: [IMail Forum] Fw: Having USERID of 2 characters Mark, At the risk of sounding flippant, one of the best reasons for switching to Ipswitch's IMail Server is this very [vendor-provided] discussion list. Not only will you find *deep* expertise from the gurus (they know who they are so I won't mention names) but Ipswitch staff also monitors this list, often offering very helpful advice though it is provided on an informal basis -- the preferred channel being e-mailing or phoning Ipswitch Support. There is also an extensive Knowledge Base and archives of discussions, not to mention an excellent manual. Last I checked, IMail Server was the top *commercial* product used by ISPs and others. (I am thus excluding open-source/free Unix-based "sendmail" and what it entails in MS-centric sites.) The above is not meant to badmouth MailMax but rather to compare it with IMail Server which has rich support from users (mail admins) more than willing to share tips and help other IMail admins in numerous ways. Are there any particular reasons as to why you switched to Imail from MailMax? -Mark To Unsubscribe: http://www.ipswitch.com/support/mailing-lists.html List Archive: http://www.mail-archive.com/imail_forum%40list.ipswitch.com/ Knowledge Base/FAQ: http://www.ipswitch.com/support/IMail/ To Unsubscribe: http://www.ipswitch.com/support/mailing-lists.html List Archive: http://www.mail-archive.com/imail_forum%40list.ipswitch.com/ Knowledge Base/FAQ: http://www.ipswitch.com/support/IMail/ To Unsubscribe: http://www.ipswitch.com/support/mailing-lists.html List Archive: http://www.mail-archive.com/imail_forum%40list.ipswitch.com/ Knowledge Base/FAQ: http://www.ipswitch.com/support/IMail/
