Since the problem is so repeatable, activate Imail SMTP debug logging (but I'm not real hopeful since it's pretty useless in general) and then also see if Imail is writing anything to the system logs (again, I'm not too hopeful). You can see here that inadequate logging makes debugging really difficult.We had so many upset users we had to back off. No time at the immediate moment to address this just now. I will be returning to it shortly. Even on a complete reboot of the server with the firewall completely off it persisted. Authentication just seemed to stall right in the middle of the process. Don't know why.
There are also tools, from NTinternals.com, I think, or listed at ultratech, that will let you see all file openings, and you might see whether the AUTH command from the client is causing Imail AUTH routines to get as far as accessing the registry.
