Deja vue. We have experienced this a lot. Going to version 7.x helped but not 100%. I have been rebooting my Imail servers every night.
-----Original Message----- From: Dan Geiser [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]] Sent: Monday, February 03, 2003 2:59 PM To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: [IMail Forum] IMail Server Authentication Issue Hello, All, We are currently running IMail Server version 6.06. We have around 90 hosts configured on the server with the majority of them using a dedicated IP address and a handful, 6 or so, set up as Virtual Hosts without a dedicated IP. For User Management we use the IMail Database. We also do SMTP Authentication so no one can use our server as an open relay. Most of the time things work flawlessly with this server but in the past few months I have noticed an recurring issue. When the issue first started it was occuring maybe once a week, then a few times a week, then once a day, then a few times a day and now this afternoon this issue started occuring continously for about an hour until we finally had to reboot the whole physical server. Since we rebooted, about 30 minutes ago, it seems to have gone away but I'm sure it will resurface so I thought I'd start researching it while we have some breathing room. In addition to our clients who receive their e-mail through the IMail Server we also send and receive our in-house e-mail through the same server so I have a pretty good idea of how it manifests itself: I will be sending and receiving e-mail just fine then one time when I try to send an outgoing e-mail message the e-mail client will prompt me to re-enter the username and password information. I can see that the username is correct. If I re-type the password and hit enter the message won't go. This happens continously until one of 2 things happens. #1 The quickest way to resolve the issue is for me to connect to the mail server directly via Terminal Services , bring up IMail Administrator and go to Localhost -> SMTP tab. If I stop and then restart the SMTP Server service the e-mail message which has been causing me problems goes out immediately. #2 Another way which it sometimes resolves itself is that if I don't stop and restart the SMTP service it will start to work again correctly in 5 or 10 minutes. The POP3 e-mail client that I am using is Outlook Express 6 and I also know that it occurs with others in-house who are using Outlook 2002. I don't specifically which e-mail clients are customers are using but I've not been able to find any pattern in the e-mail clients that are being used. It appears to be an equal opportunity issue. It seems to me that after a period of time IMail's ability to do authentication against it's user database gets messed up. I don't know why this is occuring or necessarily what we can do about it. But I was hoping that someone this list has had this sort of experience while using IMail Server with a setup similar to ours. If so I would be interested in knowing if there are specific settings we can tweak in IMail or whether there is a patch which might help address this issue or perhaps it's just a matter of upgrading to a current version. Any help at all in getting to the bottom of this matter would be greatly appreciated.
