The cert that is sent to you from the TCA is digitally set to expire, depending on the life of the cert you requested, during the purchase. Typically the period is one year (probably more for budgeting purposes than anything) but I recall that you can pay for a longer term.
At any rate, to "renew" your cert you actually have to get a new one - at least with Verisign. Thus, they require a new CSR. I guess I had assumed, probably like you, that I'd just go to the website, give them my cc number again and the expiration date would just be extended another year. This, evidently, is not how the whole process works. I still must place more of my frustration with Ipswitch. If this is the way the trusted authority SSL cert process works then Imail should be built to work within that process rather than taking its own, inconvenient, tangent.
