Thanks for the info. We're upgrading the server to a Dell (Dude!) with 1 ghz of ram and 2.4ghz Intel 4 processor.
The problem I have with this is that 5 years ago with a lesser machine than a 233 with 128mb of ram, service providers were able to provide a great deal of throughput on their mail servers.
The reason is that the bottleneck for sending out E-mail isn't CPU speed or memory. It's bandwidth and the number of processes Windows can handle. So you can get a quad 2.4GHz server with 16GB of RAM, and you'll see the same results.
We've got a list of 150,000 email addresses. Right now, we're using Cold Fusion to spool all of the messages and then send them along to the SMTP server.
How big is each E-mail? Assuming 5K, that is 715MB of traffic. That will take over an hour on a T1, assuming that the software can handle the load. IMail isn't designed to handle rates of several million E-mails per day. It can handle several hundred thousand quite well, but millions gets difficult.
