Unfortunately, it won't speed up delivery much.
But the critical point is sending deferrals to a fallback relay machine would keep 1000's of deferred msgs out of Imail's queue directory, and we know how Imail queue processing can flake out in that situation.
but you should see well over 90% delivered properly (or rejected) the first time.
A 10% deferral rate, horrendous (15K emails stuck in Imail's queue dir), which will kill delivery throughput and tie up the SMTP processes with DNS and MX timeouts.
I don't believe there is such a setting -- but if there were, it would be non-RFC-compliant (and would definitely prevent some deliveries, as some mailservers wait 30+ seconds to send the SMTP greeting).
Well, there are very few legit MX's that are that slow. And, if there's an RFC that says we have to tie up our MTA waiting for such ridiculous delays, the RFC is simply wrong.
You have to keep this "RFC compliance" thing in perspective, esp with email where defending your mail server against abuse and broken MTAs far outweighs slavish, PC-think compliance with RFC's.
