How about if I set the primary IMAIL server to try 1 time before sending mail through a remote gateway?
Wouldn't that speed up delivery?
Unfortunately, it won't speed up delivery much. IMail will still have to try delivery of 150,000 E-mails, with a maximum of 30 parallel processes. That will only speed up delivery of E-mails that couldn't be delivered the first time, but you should see well over 90% delivered properly (or rejected) the first time.
There must be an SMTP connection timeout setting where the timeout could be lessened to say 10 seconds so that faster servers would receive the messages and the remote gateway would send to the slower servers?
I don't believe there is such a setting -- but if there were, it would be non-RFC-compliant (and would definitely prevent some deliveries, as some mailservers wait 30+ seconds to send the SMTP greeting). In this case, though, it would be a useful options, as the mail would still get delivered (if it was set up to go to a gateway after the 1st attempt).
