Bryan, All MS windows MAPI compliant applications that send email are designed to use the underlying 'MS exchange' MAPI dlls. This doesn't requrie an exchange server, it just requires those DLLs and supporting exchange 'profiles'. The MAPI functionality used to be provided by the older MS Exchange Client (so other applications could use email - interfacing with MAPI instead of writing a whole messaging layer). The actual mail client has been replaced by MS Outlook, although the MAPI DLLs are still based on the older MS Exchange client and are installed by default on all Windows workstations / servers.
Sandy is saying that all you have to do is configure a MAPI profile using the "Mail" control panel in Win2k. This configures the unerlying MAPI subsystem. MS SQL then sends mail using the system MAPI calls.
