I have caught this thread late, so perhaps I am not discussing the same thing, but we too have been having problems where the SMTP service restarts multiple times each day (between 5-20 times a day). We first noticed this in 8.01HF1, but the problem might have been there since v8.0. In the Imail log there is no error, only the "SMTP service started on port 25" message. In the Windows system event log we see "SMTP service terminated unexpectedly...". In the spool directory we see incomplete .smd files, most frequently only containing a few header lines. I am trying to isolate the problem, but have so far been unsuccessful. If anyone else is having this problem, maybe we can help each other.
