I agree that you want to be precise about the space you provide, but I don't agree that Ipswitch's approach is appropriate. The text of your email might total to 20 MB, but if the mailbox files total to 30 MB, that's your real usage. If I'm renting a garage, I need enough space for my entire car, including room to open the doors.
In our particular case, our software compares file size (the sum of all mailboxes) with the mailbox limit. It issues warnings at 70%, 80%, and 90% (those are adjustable numbers) of capacity, and then sends the admin a notice when the box is full. This discrepency over the delimiters poses an issue because it makes our warnings less accurate. So I find the exclusion of the delimiters both misleading and problematic. The only solutions I can think of are to either put in a fudge factor (assume that the delimiters will always be 5% of the file size), or actually open each box and count the size of the messages. The first idea is inaccurate, while the second idea is inefficient. Got any ideas?
