This is done so that it's reporting the actual size of the messages in the mailbox not including the amount used by delimeters. That way if you are allowing 10M of messages in a mailbox you actually can store a full 10M of messages, not loose space from delimiters.
The delimeter line really doesn't take up much space, but there is one line for each message. If you have thousands of messages it could add up to make more of a difference.
