I wasn't all that happy with Imail's SMTP performance either but it's a good POP3 server so I deployed a Postfix server as a gateway. I now have the best of both worlds: A kickass SMTP server that returns a proper errors when mail doesn't get delivered so you know what the problem is, easy use of RBLs, easy blocking of bad guys with an error that tells the user on the other end why his mail was rejected and a simple to admin POP3 server.
