Moved our 100 user company from Imail to Exchange 2003. Never been happier.
I get no more calls in the middle of the night. Our users with 1GB+
mailboxes have no more performance issues. No more .pst files. And the
best part, asta la vista queue manager!
But that just works for us. Others have different needs requiring a
different tool. Exchange and Imail really have different markets.
Running them on the same machine would not be optimal of course.
1) Exchange will use the lesser of:
a) all the memory it needs
b) all the memory available
While it surrenders RAM to other applications as needed, those other
application may not perform as they would on their own machine.
2) Complicates disaster recovery.
3) Only one service can listen on port 25. Imail would probably do so and
forward exchange-bound content to port26 with IIS SMTP set to listen there.
4) If you use webmail a lot for both Imail and Exchange (Outlook Web
Access), you'll need a good machine.
Alternatives:
Only 20 people want Exchange? Is that what I read?
Consider Small Business Server
www.microsoft.com/sbs
It has a competitive price point for similar solutions.
Or go with another product offering some of the collaborative features held
within Exchange.

I don't know how this is possible for iMail 6.x, store/forward, they could
both run on the same server but you can only have one MTA on port 25. One
might be able to have iMail forward the mail to Exchange.. but I don't think
ver 6.x can do this? Personally I would update IMail to ver 8.x .. update
all the antivirus features etc. Exchange is 'ok' and E2003 is even better;
but for just 100 users IMHO it's hardly worth the enormouse amount of labor
hours, sercuity patches, Licensing, etc.
