John, I had not heard of the D&B incident. Funny, I use SpamCop for blocking and I get stuff from D&B all the time. I do know that there are some pretty major ISPs (like AOL) who simply DROP (accept delivery, delete) mail based upon single DNSRBLs though. I completely disagree with that. At least with blocking the sender knows exactly why the message was not delivered and can take some sort of action. Personally, if I were on a DNSRBL, I'd WANT to know that my mail was getting blocked, rather than taking a chance of having it dropped by AOL or through some sort of weighting system.
I've never had a problem with this policy, although I currently only do it on secondary MX servers (almost everything that hits those servers is spam to begin with). On my main server, I actually use a combo of DNSRBL tests, but the false positives are so extremely rare that I have considered going this route on the main server as well. FYI, I run a very low volume server, less than 3,000 messages a day sometimes. I know each of my hosting customers personally. I know what kind of mail they get, and where it comes from. I actually go through my iMail logs (yes, the entire log!) some days to look for suspicious patterns, and have a pretty good feel for what is going on on my network. A false positive is my worst enemy, so I am pretty conservative. Still, I would not hesitate to reject at SMTP level based on SpamCop -- based upon my experiences thus far. That's just me though.
