I have had poor results with AOL and VPN. We have found that AOL ver 6 works the best (not that v6 is much better) with our Cisco concentrator all the other versions are too flaky, so I keep a v6 disk around for the people that don't want to give up AOL. Talking to AOL tech support wasn't any help as they said that AOL is targeted for home users and not for business use such as VPN. We suggest our users to find a different ISP if they want to use VPN reliably. All users that switch from AOL stop having VPN issues.
Others may have different results, but our only true fix is for the users to move away from AOL. I do understand that may not be an option for some. Good luck.
