Is it possible for IMGate to know about valid accounts on the Imail Server
in order stem the tide of dictionary attacks. I see that vamsoft can do it
via AD, but I'm using an external SQL database. Both solutions sound
compelling.

Pick you poison. There ain't no free lunch. Send $1000s to MS every
year for server licenses, or write your own $$custom_software, or spend
$1000s on the latest hardware (aka room heaters) to run that bloatware, etc,
etc.

or add opensource plumbing solutions for your MXs, DNS, outbound gateway, AV
scanners, pay no licenses forever, get back $1000 in bandwidth forever.

Running IMGate does not require you to be a unix guru and certified unix
sysadmin. The majority of IMGate users are/were MS GUI-only
jockeys/junkies just like you, and now, somewhat de-toxed, they are running
an effective opensource solution, adminning their own *nix boxes just enough
to get buy, and saving many $1000s year in and year out.

Len
