I tried this very solution between a Windows based xmailserver
( http://www.xmailserver.org ) and an Imail server and I found it
    was too slow.

I ended up with the solution I posted a while back
    http://www.smartbusiness.com/imail/imusrsvr.asp
which does verify an address from Imail much caster than SMTP
dialogue. In fact this is almost as fast as reading from a file.

This should work on IMAIL registry or ODBC database.
There is one Perl client example.
