1. Is there a way to increase the speed with which imail processes mail?
I see that we can increase the number of smtp processes. Is that recommended? Mine are set to 30. It doesn't look like there are ever 30 processes in the task manager.

.. probably has little effect.

Then there is the: "tries before returning to sender" and "Queue timer." Are these settings a way to increase the smtp speed or a way to screw things up?

it the remote MX ain't taking mail, nothing Imail params can do about. DON'T set you retry interval to seconds or 1 minute, because you could trigger connection-rate-limiting MX defenses.

DO re-try for at least several hours.

2. I have 14,000 files in the spooler but the "View queue" shows about 5,000 emails. Is that because there are two or three files for each email or because there are some orphaned files floating around in there? If there are orphaned files is there a program to "match up" the email files and remove the orphans?

welcome to the Imail list. If you had checked the Imail list arhcives, spool/ dir (and partition) cleaning, defragging are fundamental IMail admin tasks. Imail gags with too many files in spool\ and a badly fragmented spool\ paritition.
