Subject: Re[2]: [IMail Forum] PTR records on our own Class C
Yes, but it's the wrong answer that sends someone off on an unnecessary wild-goose chase. . .
Not truly a wild-goose chase, as the ISP -- usually much more responsive by phone than a registrar -- would be able to rapidly discern the extenuating routing circumstances and would direct the client to the proper place.
And I'd say that Darin's 999/1000 is actually much too low. It's probably more like 99,999/100,000 times that a person who. . .
a) doesn't have a PTR for their mailserver in April 2005;
b) doesn't know that forward DNS is unrelated to reverse DNS;
c) exhausts the DNS resources on the net without finding guidance there;
d) posts to an IMail list with this FAQ, without noting that they have already consulted their bandwidth provider, as the archives (until now) always recommend; and
e) is the sole IT person charged with solving this problem
. . . does not own their Class C. This is not meant as a slur on Ken, who certainly has skills outside this arena that we do not, but based on experience.
