Yes we have Brightmail in front of the iMail server.  When you say the spam
gateway doesn't know who the user is do you mean the user who is sending or
who the message needs to be delivered to?  And what other ways can I test
like you have?

It loks like you have an Anti-spam gateway set up as your MX. IMail will 
check the address in the MX record and issue a "rcpt to" for the user to see

if there is a return of OK. I would bet your anti-spam gateway doesn't know 
who this user is. I just tested this and the machine in fact DOES know the 
user but the response was VERY slow from the PIX you have in frontof the 
machine and is probably cause a timeout on this request. With this condition

I would expect it to fail.
