Thanks for this.  I had actually read this blog, and was getting ready 
to try it.  The problem is I hadn't yet done the

|$ cat >> ~/.profile << EOF

bit, and the comment

your $HOME/.profile, and re-login."

Implies that not having done this, nothing should change.  In my case, 
though, just installing the packages was enough to break IIIM, and 
uninstalling them made IIIM work again.
