Paul and others:
First off, I realized that the tone of my reply to Paul's other post
was totally inappropriate and uncalled for. I'm sorry. It was
nothing personal.
As far as your comments go, I think the people who spam info-afs are
not going to go so far as to figure out what to put on a From: line to
get their mail through. They are sending mail to a thousand e-mail
lists because it's "free", and don't know enough about info-afs (or
any of the other lists they are spammimg) to know the subscriber list.
We have many mailing lists here at UW-Madison that are subscriber-only
post, and we have never had anyone hijack an email address to spam one
of our lists (yet). They simply move on to another list that they can
spam (like info-afs).
Making the list subscriber-only post would also eliminate the work
that Transarc is doing now trying to tune their spam filter every time
something gets out.
