I agree, I read it 2 weeks ago and found it a typical limp and banal airport book. Plot was thin, characters were dull, action was non existent, premise was stupid, implementation was laughable. Heck... The "Raiders of the Lost Ark" franchise had more historical and theological credibility. And at least they were interesting.
I kept trying to find the "shocking truths" and exposes. The fact that some people see it as a challenge to faith says more about limp and banal populist religion than about the quality of the book. If you want to read a great novel sci-fi about religion (and lots of other cool stuff) then get hold of Snow Crash by Neale Stephenson and lock yourself away for a day. In fact get Stephenson's Baroque Cycle starting with Quicksilver and have the read of your life..... Doesn't he himself describe what he's writing as fiction? Bit like science fiction: you just have to make it "sound" sensible. Which he has done. If it's good fiction it might make you think. But it's still fiction. Nothing to get het-up about.
