Terry, I want to suggest that it makes a big difference to how we relate to
each other and the world. Virtually all of the traditional doctrines of
Christianity rely on the belief in god as a supernatural being who is out
there and who has the power to intercede in the actions of humans if (he) so
wills. The doctrine of atonement, for example, relies on the assumption that
humanity was out of relationship with God because of sin entering the world
through Adam and the death of Jesus on the cross was a required sacrifice to
put humanity back into relationship with this God in heaven. Christian
language talks about Jesus coming down from heaven, performing the necessary
sacrifice and then returning to heaven to sit at God's right hand.

All of this might have been alright back when we had a 3 tired inderstanding
of the world and the earth was flat and everything moved over it or around
it, but of course we now know better.

If God is not a supernatural being but the ground of all being, then this
God can't have favorite or chosen people because this God is present in all
people equally. Not only does all of humanity become sacred, but also the
whole of creation and when we abuse others or this planet we are indeed
abusing the sacred.

I could go on, but its pumpkin time and I do need my beauty sleep.

Grace & Peace
Allan
