I have a I3000 running redhat 5.1 with a 3Com589D ethernet card.

I admittedly have just about no clue what I'm doing trying to set up my
ethernet. At my old institution, we were running DHCP and it was
simple---I told netcfg that I wanted to configure a DHCP protocol and it
just went right ahead and did it... At the new place, however, I have to
provide the IP and netmask, which I think I'm doing correctly---went right
into netcfg and edited the eth0 interface; but it doesn't work (the light
on the connection comes on briefly and then goes off).

My /var/log/messages file has two suspicious comments immediately after
the attempt to start the eth0:
(1) the kernel tries to vfree() a nonexistent vm area (05845000)
(2) route says the netmask doesn't match the route address

?!? Help?

Thanks,
      Peter
