As Craig Harpel pointed out a few days ago, the Torisan DVD is not amenable
to installing RH 5.1. My experience bears him out on that (I tried no
fewer than 3 different releases on CD, none will install to completion from
the DVD). I copied the CD over to hard disk and booted of RH5.1 CD, chose
local HD installation, and I am now booting linux from LOADLIN.EXE which is
extremely surreal, because the Windows 95 blue-sky screen comes up and then
suddenly is replaced by Linux character-mode boot stream. (Thanks Marvin
Stodolsky for nudging me in that direction).
I'm building up my installation with current neomagic XFConfig (from the
vendor site http://precisioninsight.com , not Redhat) and the latest
PCMCIA drivers. Thank you Nigel for those pointers.
Anyway, thanks a bunch everyone. That was all great advice, and it really
blew away the impediments that were making me look like Win95 was my first
choice for everything.

If this were merely my opinion, I'd probably keep it to myself.
My employer is, nonetheless, not responsible for my expressions.
