Ed,
My Linux Debian 2 installation was painless on a 3200
>From your description of your failures with BOTH Redhat and Slackware,
one might guess that its a powersaver setting that is not perceiving
Linux actions and is putting the Laptop to sleep. Thus upon poweron:
1) Hit F2
2) Within Setup, disable all power saving options intially
3) Try the installation again.
On my company laptop, I have to keep Win95 "natural".
So I start Linux through the following Win95 config.sys
where vmlinuz is a copy of the kernel installed in the linux partition.

Whenever you install a new kernel remember to copy it to
C:\linux if you use LOADLIN, otherwise you will boot with the old
kernel.
LOADLIN will manage boot anywhere, multigig drive or even another
physical disk. This is an alternative to changing the master boot
record under LILO
