Questions from an American movie, set in the South:
1. *Cheerios*
(breakfast cereal) by General Mills see http://www.genmills.com/
2. *Gifted and Talented*
I found out from the Internet that this is a special educational program
created in the Students Education Act of 1994, but would it be OK to
translate it with (the Swedish word for) 'scholarship'? "The guy who was in
Gifted and Talented with you" = "The guy who also got a scholarship"? This
would be a different meaning. The guy who was in the special class (advanced
class, special education, class for special kids, kids who are very bright
or advanced in some way)
3. This place (=the South) is *crawling with critters* (said by a
northerner)
Animals or people or both? Probably just animals (bugs and varmints :),
raccoons, snakes, bugs, deer, opossums, rabbits, etc.
4. *substance awareness program*
I know what it is - suggestions how to say it in another, clearer way?
"Say no to drugs program?" Drug program, Anti-drug program,
substance awareness program is awkward to say.
5. *thank God for small favors*
Seems to be a common expression. From where? A new, popular quotation, an
old saying? Should I translate it literally (sounds strange in Swedish)?
Suggestions of how to say in in other words?
Modern expression in the U.S. it can be sarcastic in the way it's used.
Probably was sarcastic, meaning don't put ourself out. Don't go out of your
way to help. It would help to know the context surrounding the line.
Could mean the person appreciated the little thing that was done.
6. A girl wants to go home and study for a Latin exam, and her boyfriend
says that she should forget Latin, it's a dead language, and that she
should be dealing with something that's alive (=him). She says "cut it
out", and then he says: I'm serious. *The way things are going, five-ten
years from now you're not gonna be able to drink or eat anything, rub up
against anything. Everybody's gonna be completely immobilized.*
What on earth does he mean?
He means that computers are going to free us from all tactile experiences in
our lives. Or liberate us. He wanted her to study him and his body. Science
fiction believer take a pill for food, each person in their own pod or
enclosure with no other human contact. No human touch or human experience.
Hope we never lose that, it's the reason we're here. :)
