Hi Martha,
as you say, rates differ enormously according to countries, so if you
client is in the US, you should wait for some advice from there; in the
meantime, though, here's the standard for Italy: 8-9% of the rate you
charge for word. Or, you could charge your usual per hour rate, as an
alternative.
