You're right--once I was asked by the author of a book I had translated to
do a final go-over of her proofs for her (I usually want to do so, whether
paid or not, if my name is going to be on the book--professional pride...)
since her English was weak, and discovered a page where they had printed
the same two paragraphs twice in a row. Apparently no one had noticed
(this was the absolute final stage before going to press), and it was
purely by chance that I was looking at the book at all. The nightmares of
publishing...
