Outages, utilization, errors - all the stuff in a probe popup window that can be
clicked to produce a strip chart. That goes for custom probes, too - I use IM to
track disk space trends on some of our servers.

Hourly, daily, weekly, monthly, yearly - it would be nice to be able to produce a
report over any time span that's covered by the data.

I like keeping everything, and after several years of InterMapper usage my log files
are getting pretty darn big. I've got over 650 megs of stuff in that folder. It
would be really nice if I could get better use out of it.

I've asked for it before - I wish IM would automatically log the stats of every device
and every link drawn on every map. If it's on a map, it's important. It would be
nice to be able to go back in time and see what was going on, even before I thought to
create a strip chart. User: "Our app crashed last night - did something happen on the
network?" Me: "Gee, I don't know - I failed to create a strip chart for your server's
network link. I'm a jerk and a creep and my feet stink too."

As to how or where the data is stored - I guess I don't much care. I want the ability
to use my own reporting tools if IM can't do the exact sort of report I want, and I
also want a huge database of log stuff so I don't have to feel like a jerk. These two
requirements seem to point at MySQL or some other "standard" database.

If disk space is an issue (well, duh) then something like RRD where the data is
abstracted after a certain user-configurable length of time would be nice. I haven't
studied the format, though, and I don't know how easy it is to produce custom reports
from it. If I could choose to save, say, three months of detailed statistics, I would
probably not look like a jerk to the users. I imagine you could do this with MySQL as
well.

Thanks for the chance to give our input!

Later,

Doug

Folks:We are beginning to think about enhancements to future versions of
InterMapper. One frequent request we hear is for better reporting capabilities. Now that
strip charts are implemented in InterMapper Remote/Console, InterMappercan provide a
certain measure of historical information. But it's likely thatyou would like to see
InterMapper could collect, format and display lots ofother data. We'd like to know what
kinds of reports or historical data that would be useful.Use the questions below as
starters, and send your thoughts back to this list tospur further comments. - Do
you need daily, weekly, monthly reports? Of what kinds of information?- Do you
want reports of outages, traffic trends, utilization?- Do you care how the data is
saved? Would text files suffice? Is an SQLdatabase required?- If the data were
saved in a SQL database, would you want direct access to theDBMS?- How would you
use this data? To help improve service? To look for troublespots? To convince your
boss you're doing a good job? :-)We look forward to your thoughts. Many thanks!Rich
